Education, Education, Education. You have done your due diligence. You hired a certified coder or you outsourced coding to an agency using only certified coders. That’s fantastic. Now, what next? You may be wondering what we mean? What do you do to ensure the knowledge, approach, and skill of those in charge of your ICD-10 coding stays sharp?
Education, Education, Education:
Regardless of whether coding is in-house or outsourced, you need to ask how the coders keep up with changes. What type of refresher courses have they taken? Who is their “go to” in the industry when frequently asked coding questions arise? What websites do the coding department frequent to find answers? Is coding software utilized by your provider? If so, is it reputable? Do you know what the best coding software systems out there are? The bottom line is that you need to keep coding in the continuing education loop within your agency to make sure they are up-to-date. If you outsource, your provider should be able to communicate what type of ongoing education your coder has completed other than being certified.
Always Have A Back-Up Plan In Place:
If you have in-house coding, what happens if a coder quits or is unable to return to work for a significant amount of time. Can the rest of your coders handle that amount of surge? Better yet, will they be able to provide the same level of expertise if they have so much work backing up? What if you are in an RCD state? You can’t afford ICD 10 coding to hold up the process. So, do your homework. Get a back-up outsourcing company on board to handle surge or turnover as well as unanticipated leave of absences that can be lengthy and put you way behind the 8-ball. You won’t regret it and your other coders will thank you (as will your finance department).
