PDGM, Covid, And ICD-10, Oh My! Make Sure You Capture Everything You Need During These Trying Times For Our Industry And Our Country!

There is so much going on in our world today with the onset of Covid-19. As people are staying at home and practicing social distancing, those in our industry are out there in the middle of it.  We approached 2020 preparing for PDGM and its changes, but were not prepared for the pandemic that would ensue shortly after the new year. Now is definitely NOT the time to forget about ICD 10 coding.

Coders Working From Home:

If you are an agency with in-house coding, most likely your staff is currently coding from home. How is that working for you compared to your previous set-up? Although so many things can be done remotely in today’s world of technology, it is often a struggle for those accustomed to doing things face to face. Or, for that matter, with paper copies of things.  Maybe your agency did well with communication between in-house coders and clinicians before social distancing, but now it is an issue. You may be dealing with the virus having hit close to home with coders who are sick and unable to work. All are potential issues affecting the ability for your coding system to run well.

ICD 10 Coding Has To Be Right:

As agency administrators, we must continue to recognize the importance of proper coding during this time. As we deal with increased costs related to safety of clinicians in the field, we can’t afford to lose reimbursement. The ICD-10 coding drives the reimbursement and most importantly, the care plan. Even for agencies with a smaller Medicare footprint, the need to complete the process correctly is more important today than it has ever been.  Many agencies minimize the need for certified coders and accuracy if Medicare is just a small portion of the overall business plan. It shows in the overall reimbursement to these providers. It is not uncommon to see numbers $500-$1000 less per episode in agencies where proper coding and Oasis training is missing. Even if you only do 5 Medicare admissions per month, can you afford to lose $2,500-$5,000 every month to take care of those patients? Why would you want to do that?

Consider Outsourcing Your Coding:

At Kenyon Homecare Consulting, we have certified coders that are also Oasis certified. They can assist with the coding, Oasis review and education. They help clinicians to create and establish care plans that fit the acuity of the patient. Taking the time to outsource now can save you a ton of money in the future and help make your clinicians better at accuracy in the field. Call us today at 206-721-5091 or contact us online to see how we can help your coding process.  We will complete 5 side-by-side re-codes of current charts. This will help you determine accuracy and efficiency of your current system of Oasis review and coding.
